The mythology of the American West is among the most pervasive and enduring narratives in the cultural imagination of the United States. Yet the iconography through which this mythology is communicated — the cowboy, the open range, the tools and dress of the frontier — has been systematically detached from the diverse communities whose labor, knowledge, and traditions gave rise to it. In the Shadows of the West intervenes in this historical erasure, featuring artists that collectively reclaim and reconstruct the pluralistic origins of Western American culture.
The exhibition opens on Friday, January 22, 6–9 PM.
