SOMArts Cultural Center is excited to announce the official 40th anniversary t shirt designed by artist extraordinaire Alyssa Aviles! Aviles’ design celebrates SOMArts as an inclusive space for Bay Area community members to gather and thrive in an ever changing San Francisco.

Aviles beautifully encompasses SOMArts rich history of nurturing emerging Bay Area artists and curators. Drawing inspiration from SOMArts garden, she uses flora as a metaphor for the ways QTPOC artists have flourished, bloomed, and stepped into their power.

SOMArts is extremely important in providing a space for artists to make authentic, often opinionated work that addresses the passions and plights of their communities. Every exhibit I’ve been to at SOMArts has been extremely unique and representative of San Francisco on a community level. I love that SOMArts represents such a diverse group of people and intentionally makes room for our beautiful communities to be seen and heard,” says Aviles.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Aviles is an artist and arts educator who is deeply influenced by her Mission roots. Her creative practice “explores the intersecting identities of the Xicana woman through personal narratives of [her] own navigation through nepantla — the idea of being neither here nor there.”  She currently works at several schools and community spaces, and operates Suavecita Press, a women’s printmaking collective.

The official 40th anniversary t shirts drops Thursday, March 7, 2019 and will be available for purchase at SOMArts’ public events, programs, and openings!
