2024 Murphy & Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards Exhibition celebrates 15 emerging artists shaping the future of Bay Area arts

On view November 2–December 6, 2024
Opening Reception, November 1, 6–9 PM PST

September 3, 2024, San Francisco, CA – SOMArts Cultural Center and the San Francisco Foundation present the 2024 Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards Exhibition, which features 15 promising visual artists developing their artistic potential in digital art, film/video, hybrid practice, installation, mixed media, painting, photography and sculpture.

The pursuit of an MFA provides students with rigorous training in their artistic discipline, mentorship, and professional development, making scholarship opportunities essential. The Jack and Gertrude Murphy Competitive Award and the Edwin Anthony and Adalaine Boudreaux Cadogan scholarships has promoted the advancement of Bay Area MFA students, encourage exploration of their artistic potential, and provide crucial financial support for those currently studying at California College of the Arts, UC Berkeley, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, and Stanford University. Nearly every MFA student from a qualifying university applied, underscoring the critical need for financial support.

SFF supports artists and organizations across the region to be able to stay and create in their own communities. We see careers in the arts as legitimate work, know that creative industries are critical to the Bay Area’s economy, and celebrate the essential role artists play in our civic life – establishing a sense of place and identity,” share Esailama G. Artry-Diouf, San Francisco Foundation’s Associate Director of Arts & Culture.

The Jack K. and Gertrude Murphy Award of $40,000 is given to one MFA student of exceptional caliber with great artistic promise. This year’s awardee is Stanford University’s Elina Frumerman, whose practice is informed by her practice as a Jewish refugee and explores how generations pass down cultural narratives through photography, printmaking, and installation.

Edwin Anthony and Adalaine Boudreaux Cadogan both experienced financial challenges as art students and understood the great difference scholarships can make in the early phase of an artist’s career. The winners of the Cadogan Scholarships receive $6,500 each to support their MFA studies. Cadogan scholarship awardees include:

  • Cooper Salmon (Stanford), a visual artist and painter with a vision disability whose figurative works of everyday moments draw inspiration from people in his life and his evolving experience with sight.
  • Ashley Spencer (CCA) explores time and material histories through a personalized lens, addressing generational grief, the Black experience in conversation with hauntology, and contemporary issues such as women’s bodies and autonomy.
  • Zedekiah Gonsalves–Schild (CCA) focuses on the tension between resilience and fragility and as a disabled artist, is interested “in how we inhabit our bodies, the bodies relationship to the work of living, and how that work shapes us.”
  • Lucia Gonzaléz Ippolito’s (SFSU) draws from her lineage of Mission-based muralists, screen-printers, teachers and cultural organizers to reflects the “dissonance, ambivalence, and struggle in the lives of everyday people.”

Fellowship recipients were selected by Lauren Schell Dickens, Chief Curator of the San Jose Museum of Art, Renee Cycla Villaseñor, Director of Exhibitions and Operations at ICA SF, and 2020 Murphy Award recipient and 2022 SECA Awardee Gregory Rick. All awardees benefit from mentorship by renowned artist and curator Kevin B. Chen and SOMArts Cultural Center.

“The SOMArts’ gallery serves as a site of inquiry, experimentation, and discovery, providing this year’s awardees the space to showcase their unique perspectives and voices,” says Carolina Quintanilla, SOMArts’ Gallery Director.
