Landmarks that come and go

During her childhood her family was nomadic. They constantly migrated from the city and once from the country. Being an immigrant living in the United States together along with these transitions in her personal history, aroused a curiosity about the biological and cyclical processes that occur in nature and on landscape.

Landmarks that come and go narrates the cyclical history of one of the most outstanding symbols in the collective imagination and memory of the State of California. The palm tree as an urban landmark reminds us that, like us, is also a transplanted inhabitant. Through poetry and mixed media installations, Viviana hopes to generate dialogues about the passage of time, our relationship with the natural environment, and the inevitable cycle of life.

Viviana’s exhibition is on view from April 30–July 31, 2022

About the artist

Viviana Carlos is a visual storyteller born and raised in Mexico. She earned her BA in Visual Arts from the University of Guanajuato, Mexico in 2014. She attended the Narrative Photography workshop taught by the Magnum agency at the University of Texas in 2016. She completed the continuing education program in Art Anthropology taught by the Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS) in 2018.
