About SF Open studios
ArtSpan evolved from SF Open Studios (SFOS), begun in 1975 by a small group of enterprising artists who concurrently opened their studios to the public annually over one weekend to increase the accessibility of their work. Following the devastation of the 1989 earthquake, these artists created a strong organization to ensure SF Open Studios would remain a San Francisco tradition, and in 1991, ArtSpan received its nonprofit, tax-exempt status. SF Open Studios has grown exponentially, spanning multiple weekends, with over 600 participating artists and 100,000+ visitors.
This year, ArtSpan’s SF Open Studios program will run from Friday, September 19 through Sunday, October 19. Our 51st season includes: ArtLaunch, our in-person kick-off celebration in the SF Open Studios Exhibition; Art Tasting, a collector event with the Exhibition; and five weekends of artist-hosted studio events.
