As an Oakland native, black woman, African culture has a rich influence in Avé’s home town. This is what inspired the photographic journey in search for where Avé’s ancestors have landed in the African Diaspora. Keep it Diasporic: Colombia is the first series of photos taken with a 1980’s film camera. The idea behind the use of film photography is to convey a timeless quality in the photos through darkroom development. Capturing light and movement gives diversity in how Avé views her subjects. Avé’s intention is to inspire black people around to the world to creatively explore their African ancestral roots.
