HUMO

Humo, or smoke, is in a constant state of flux and oscillation; humo is emitted when a material undergoes combustion or pyrolysis.

Humo is a reflection of the changing landscape of home as a product of gentrification. This body of work is comprised of studies and final pieces from the past 5 years, reflecting the changing relationship to home becoming more alien as familiar places are replaced by luxury development, and generations of people are displaced by an unaffordable cost of living. Humo chronicles the perspective of a San Francisco native amidst this transformation and the emotional phases felt throughout this period of youth and coming of age.

About Alyssa Aviles

Alyssa Aviles is a Xicana artist and arts educator in San Francisco, California. Her work explores the intersecting identities of the Xicana woman through personal narratives of her navigation through nepantla. She illustrates the complexities, dualities, rituals, and spirituality she has inherited from generations of ancestors navigating through the same parameters. Alyssa works primarily through the medium of printmaking, exploring its symbolic relationship to her heritage and community. Alyssa currently works in several schools and community spaces as a teaching artist and operates Suavecita Press, a women’s printmaking collective.
