DESCRIPTION:Join us for the closing reception of Paola de la Calle’s In This House We Are All Buried Alive on Thursday\, August 24\, 6:30–9:00 PM at SOMArts Cultural Center. \nThis gathering features an artist talk between Paola de la Calle and poet\, installation and adornment artist Dr. Alan Pelaez Lopez and free community portraits by photographer Lara Kaur. \n\n\nRSVP today!  \nPaola de la Calle is a Colombian-American multidisciplinary artist whose work examines home\, identity\, borders\, and nostalgia through the use of textiles\, printmaking\, and sculpture. In her practice\, De la Calle combines photographs sourced from family albums and found images which she prints on textiles\, as well as poetic texts\, paintings made with coffee instead of paint\, and found objects\, to mine the aesthetics of nostalgia and examine the socio-political relationship between the United States and Colombia.  \nShe is a graduate of the New York Foundation of the Arts Immigrant Artist Program in 2019 and the lead artist for the Caravan for the Children Campaign as part of her residency with Galeria de la Raza in 2020. She’s a KALA Fellowship Award recipient and currently Artist-in-Residence at the Textile Arts Center in Brooklyn\, NY. She’s been featured on Hyperallergic’s “A View from the Easel”\, NPR\, The Boston Art Review\, and VOGUE among others. \nPhotography courtesy of artist \nDr. Alan Pelaez Lopez is an AfroIndigenous (Zapotec) poet\, installation\, and adornment artist from Oaxaca\, México. SUMMARY:Node Mulch
DESCRIPTION:Node Mulch is a free\, public exhibition of new work from London-based artist John Walter created during his tenure as inaugural QBI artist-in-residence. For this work\, Walter partnered with QBI scientist Antoine Forget\, and the exhibition is curated by Glen Helfand\, critic and chair of Graduate Curatorial Practice at California College of the Arts. Node Mulch will be open from July 26-30 at the SOMArts Cultural Center. The exhibition consists of multiple events\, so make sure to check out the full agenda on Eventbrite and register for the times/events you want to attend. \nWalter\, whose previous work has addressed HIV in sexual health and bioscience\, eschews existing notions of “Sci-Art”\, weaving scientific narratives\, imagery and ideas together within a broader cultural milieu. Starting in the fall of 2022\, he worked alongside scientists at UCSF undertaking research into viruses\, cancers and the interactions between small molecules. This is an exciting new initiative that brings together the Bay Area’s scientific and art communities. The gallery presentation\, at SOMArts Cultural Center\, showcases the vast and vibrant range of his playfully incisive work. His new body of work comprises painting\, drawing\, artist’s books\, sculpture\, costume\, and video. \nThe title Node Mulch refers on one hand to the nodes in network diagrams created by QBI scientists\, and on another hand to Walter’s analogy that art-making is analogous to farming\, involving the breeding and decomposition of images (mulching). Walter’s art mulches a diversity of artistic references from Hieronymus Bosch to Keith Haring. Please click here for gallery hours.\n \nThe Annual Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards opens on Friday\, September 10\, 5:30–8:30 PM PST\, awards ceremony at 7:00 PM PST. This exhibition surveys new work from 16 recipients of the competitive Jack K. and Gertrude Murphy Award and the Edwin Anthony and Adalaine Boudreaux Cadogan Scholarships. Presented in partnership with San Francisco Foundation\, the awards are designed to further the development of Bay Area MFA students and foster the exploration of their artistic potential in hybrid practice\, installation\, mixed media\, painting\, photography\, and sculpture. \nThe Jack K. and Gertrude Murphy Award is given to an MFA student of unusual caliber with great artistic promise. Edwin Anthony and Adalaine Boudreaux Cadogan both experienced financial challenges as art students and understood the great difference scholarships can make in the early phase of an artist’s career. The winners of the Cadogan Scholarships each receive financial support their MFA studies. Inspired by their own family lineage’s experience with migration from Greece to Turkey\, Sounds like Home: Longing and Comfort through Lullabies curators Duygu and Bengü Gün uncover how lullabies can be a source of comfort when longing for home and place\, challenges it’s subliminal messaging that reproduces oppressive power structures and affirms that culture is fluid. \nConceived by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute\, The Lullaby Project pairs pregnant and new parents with professional artists to write and sing personal lullabies for their babies. This is believed to support the birth parents’ health\, aid child development\, and strengthen the bond between parent and child. He is also the co-founder of the award winning dance party Hard French – which has brought legendary artists and DJs to San Francisco. He is the director of Malaqueerche\, a cult film that inspired the JUNK film festival which he curated and screened throughout the US and Europe. He has also produced the youtube show BrownDownCrownTV for the now defunct open mic night – K’vetch. He has collaborated with artists throughout his 15 years in SF — from throwing punk shows at local dive bars to wallpaper exhibitions in nightclub bathrooms. He has a deep love of events and supporting artistic endeavors that help shape and create community. He is currently consulting on a script for a TV series about queer adventures in the Bay. \nBRONTEZ PURNELL is a writer\, musician\, dancer\, filmmaker\, and performance artist. He is the author of a graphic novel\, a novella\, a children’s book\, and the novel Since I Laid My Burden Down. The recipient of a 2018 Whiting Writers’ Award for Fiction\, he was named one of the thirty-two Black Male Writers of Our Time by T: The New York Times Style Magazine in 2018. Purnell is also the frontman for the band the Younger Lovers\, a cofounder of the experimental dance group the Brontez Purnell Dance Company\, the creator of the renowned cult zine Fag School\, and the director of several short films\, music videos\, and the documentary Unstoppable Feat: The Dances of Ed Mock. Born in Triana\, Alabama\, he’s lived in Oakland\, California\, for more than a decade. \nHEATHER MARÍA ÁCS (she/her/Mx.) is a working-class raised\, Appalachian\, mixed-race Anglo-Xicana writer/director whose work explores queer\, radical subcultures and femme-inine identities. Her films have played Big Apple Film Festival NY (Best LGBTQ Short\, FLOURISH\, 2020)\, Hollyshorts\, Brooklyn Academy of Music\, London Short Film Fest\, Newfest\, Mardi Gras FF (Australia)\, and Oaxaca IFF\, among others. \nHer company\, FemmePower Productions\, commits to intersectional representation on screen and behind the scenes.
