The winners of the Murphy and Cadogan scholarships each receive support for their MFA studies. All the students benefit from participation in a professionally curated exhibition at SOMArts Cultural Center and mentorship from curator Kevin B. DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating the opening and exhibition unveiling of In Their Name: Día de Los Muertos 2026 on Friday\, October 23\, 6–9 PM PST! The evening features a Día de los Muertos inspired artist market with local vendors and makers\, along with a special performance by Las Hijas de la Madre. \n \nTickets: $15\, free for youth 16 years old and under; NOTAFLOF \nAbout Las Hijas de la MadreLas Hijas de la Madre are Amalia Ortiz (lyricist and lead singer)\, Errezeta (lead guitar\, vocals)\, Lilith Tijerina (bass\, vocals)\, Sarah Tijerina (vocals\, keyboard)\, Dr. Kip Austin Hinton (rhythm guitar and musical direction)\, and Joaquin Muerte (drums). \nThey toured Texas\, performed at the Latinx Visions Conference at University of New Mexico\, and at the XII Congreso Internacional de Literatura Chicana y Estudios Latinos in Barcelona\, Spain. Other notable performances include The Black and Brown Punk Fests 2025 and 2019\, Luminaria 2019\, University of North Texas\, Texas Woman’s University\, Northwest Vista College\, San Antonio College\, UTRGV Edinburg and Brownsville campuses\, and Trinity University. \nLas Hijas de la Madre are a queer Chicanx feminist punk band fronted by Amalia Ortiz\, American Book Award winner for Oral Literature. Las Hijas center Tejana voices and explore the correlation of Chicanx rasquachismo and the do-it-yourself ethos of punk.
