Lidija Ristic in the Ramp Gallery
June 20–July 18, 2017
SOMArts, 934 Brannan Street
With the visual metaphors made possible by collage Ristic can force contradictory ideas, like preciousness and waste or vulnerability and virility to co-exist in the same reality. The result of such combinations creates new perspectives through which we can view these familiar objects and examine the ideas they elicit.
Through this body of work, Ristic wishes to draw comparisons between the female body and the natural world. Specifically by exploring the metaphor of the garden- a human composed and contained natural space- as a symbol for femininity and female sexuality, beauty, youth and fertility. Through this lens she opens a dialog regarding the emotional space women create and inhabit.
