Forever…Is Now: Experiments in Ritual Placemaking
Thursday, February 14, 6–9pm
SOMArts, 934 Brannan Street
Forever, A Moment: Black Meditations on Time and Space (FAM) is a multidisciplinary community art exhibition that explores Black Identity and the way it experiences, interprets, distorts, and ultimately, transforms time and space. Curated by Yetunde J. Olagbaju and Kevin Bernard Moultrie Daye, Forever, A Moment provides an innovative departure from the standard “white cube” that has dominated museums and galleries for over a century. Their curatorial vision actualizes viable alternatives to traditional modalities of display and engagement while building multiple pathways toward Black pasts, presents, and futures.
By bringing together Black artists who are investigating ritual, color, place, and history, FAM radically reshapes the gallery itself into a new type of space, one unburdened by societal expectations of Blackness. One that holds the promise of reimagining and effecting change in the spaces outside and within the gallery.
Forever,,,Is Now: Experiments in Ritual Placemaking expands on rituals new, old, and somewhere in between, with a series of ritual performances by Lukaza Brafman-Vermissimo, Davia Spain, and Gabriel Christian. This free, all ages event marks the opening of Forever, A Moment: Black Meditations on Time and Space on Thursday, February 14, 6–9pm.
