Blackbird is the visual story that accompanies the coming musical story of the same name. It is the story of self-mastery, the journey of becoming one’s highest self through recognition of potential, through the emotional work it takes to transform, and in spite of the social and institutional barriers that would inhibit personal greatness. Blackbird, the protagonist, is critical of herself and her current state, but she is also critical of how social elements and institutions have contributed to diminishing and compelled to transform herself in order to transform others. She uses a mix of personal experiences and personal observations to seek, internalize, and eventually facilitate change. Blackbird is the dark horse, the black sheep, and the underdog who no one roots for or sees coming. But she is. Blackbird is coming.

Meet the Artist:
Dom Jones will be performing in SOMArts’ annual Night Light: Multimedia Garden Party on Saturday, July 23rd, 8:30pm–midnight. Visit The Ramp Gallery for a chance to meet the artists, talk about their work and inspiration, have a drink and enjoy their awesome artwork! A cash bar will be available all evening. Tickets will be sold online for $12 or $15 at the door.
About Dom Empire
Dom Jones is the Founder and Principal Artist of Dom Empire, as well as the Executive Producer of Blackbird. Ian Davis, Lead Visual Engineer at Dom Empire and Sotheara Yem, Visual Enginer at Dom Empire worked together to create the visual story around Blackbird, which began as a music and spoken word project, yet to be released. Ian’s work has been featured in SF Moma, SF Weekly, Diablo Magazine, and much more. He has worked with Dom for almost 10 years, joining Team Empire officially last year. Ian’s work spans many lenses, including portraiture, landscape, entertainment, and more. Sotheara is a bourgeoning photographer, living and working in the Bay Area. His personal story of tragedy and triumph has inspired his work and through photography, he continues to illuminate the stories of others.
