Alan Khum in The Ramp Gallery

Loading Events

Khum’s art practice highlights the importance of Campodian diaspora through cultural preservation, life experience and family history. As a product of Cambodian refugee parents, he seeks to find interpersonal connections with people who have gone through similar traumatic life events. His art reflects on the void that most 1.5 and 2nd generation Asian Americans encounter for having split cultures. Growing up with traditional Cambodian values and maturing in an American lifestyle has left Khum feeling foreign towards his family origins. His work consists of Khmer folklore and uses cats to emphasize humor, empathy and survival prowess in order to disguise the seriousness of his narratives.
